The benefits of fasting

I completed a smoothie fast last week and boy did I feel good! My energy levels absolutely rocketed and I felt great for consuming such a high amount of nutrients throughout the day. A week on and I still feel the same, with my digestion also experiencing improvement. It’s not just the immediate benefits you get with this, but also the fact it impacts positively on your longer term health.

Fasting is a great way to detox and remove an accumulation of toxins from your body. It alleviates your body from the usual digestive process and allows it time to heal from any stress and strain it may currently be experiencing, whilst reducing bodily inflammation. It will free up energy that your body can use to begin repairing itself, restoring digestive health and eliminating waste. By consuming highly nutritious fruit and vegetables, blended and broken down, your body is being given a range of vitamins and nutrients easily and instantly.

It’s very important to prepare your body before undergoing a fast, as otherwise the release of toxins may be too much for you to bear. Over the course of a week or two, slowly wean yourself off sugar, stimulants such as coffee and alcohol, meat, fish, gluten and dairy, until by the end your final few days are filled with salad, fruit, nuts and seeds. You’re then ready to go!

Which foods are best on your fast? I’ve put together a list of the top foods to help your body and get you the best results.

Carrot, apple, lemon, berries, turmeric, ginger, wheatgrass, chlorella, aloe vera, pineapple, watermelon, pear, avocado, coconut oil, chai seeds, maca root, kale, spinach, cinnamon, mango, kiwi, beetroot, parsley, cucumber, celery, banana and garlic.

You could start the day with a blast of berries, next up a cleansing blend of carrot, apple and celery, followed by a detoxing lemon, ginger, kale, spinach and watermelon mix.

During your fast you should get plenty of rest to assist your body in the healing process and it would also be beneficial to graze on nuts and seeds in between your powerful smoothies. The fast should not be carried out for longer than 3 days and if you begin to feel too unwell during the process, stop immediately. It may be that you need to begin more gradually, as your toxic load is just too high right now. You should not fast if you are diabetic, have liver or kidney weakness, severely high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, poor circulation or if you are pregnant.

Once you have successfully completed your fast, it’s important to slowly reintroduce your foods, finishing with the most allergenic e.g. gluten and dairy. You may experience breakouts, headaches, fatigue and other symptoms during your cleanse, so be prepared. But once you’re through this, you should feel more energised, positive and lighter than before!
